Aurora

Aurora named itself after the Roman goddess of dawn when its post office opened in 1854. Former Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson grew up here. St. Andrew's College, one of Canada's premier boys private schools, has operated on its 126-acre campus since 1926. The Hills of St. Andrew neighbourhood grew up around that campus in the 1980s, brick Georgian homes on winding hillside streets shaped by the Oak Ridges Moraine. Hillary House on Wellington Street, a Gothic Revival mansion built in 1862, is a National Historic Site housing the Koffler Museum of Medicine. Aurora's Cultural Centre operates out of a restored 1886 schoolhouse on Church Street. These are not decorative institutions. They are what makes Aurora a place with actual identity.

Aurora Village, at Yonge and Wellington, is the original settlement and still the cultural centre. The Aurora GO station on Wellington connects to Union Station. Aurora is consistently ranked among the wealthiest towns in Canada. Average household income exceeds $155,000. The Greenbelt legislation protects a large southeastern portion of the town from development, which means the supply constraint is permanent. What exists will not be significantly added to.
